After looking again at the only other R-Class in the area, and discovering that it was rebuilt after a total loss, my wife went back to the dealer and signed our lives away.
We did manage to sell our little RAV4 within a few days (Sunday, to be precise), so we can afford to buy tires for the new (very comfy) potential money pit.

Whoo hoo! Congratulations! I just bought a used money pit Mercedes myself the other day. Had to go 300 miles to find the one I wanted— it’s tough when you decide you want the rare one.
Fingers crossed that we both have good luck with them!

My Allroad would like to have a word with you...

I just read your previous post about having the kids with you. I hate that things went that way.
I wish these bastard car dealers could say “hey, we’ll speed things up since you’ve got kids with you.” It never fucking fails, even if you say “I have money coming out of my ears, give me thar car!” it takes goddamn forever to buy a fucking car.

Now there’s two of us on here! Love mine. Not the cheapest car to own, but very rewarding.

Still on my shortlist, especially if I can find a clean R500 locally. We have quite a few of these around town, the key is finding the old lady who garaged it and always serviced it at the dealer. Most “family cars” get beaten to hell.

How did you convert a Toyota owner? She was supposed to follow protocol and get a Sienna.

So... you bought it even with the crappy binding arbitration clause?
What are the specifics relating to that?

Me too! I’ve wrenched quite a bit on our cars in the past, although the past couple years or so I’ve gotten spoiled. We have a mechanic who’s crazy cheap (he’ll put on junkyard stuff, parts I bring, whatever), honest and perhaps most importantly, very competent. Unfortunately it looks like we may be moving, so for the next few years I may be back to doing our car maintenance.

Yeah, I don’t love buying cars. Mindless car shopping is fine, but then you actually want to buy the fucker and it’s a total PITA.

Where do you live? The V8 is supposedly more reliable, although oddly enough, when I was looking at the “common issues”, it seemed like the diesels were the worst offenders, which I seems counter-intuitive to me. In any case, the 2 mpg difference may or may not be significant in the long run (depending on whether or not we wind up having to replace the engine over the next 5 years or so).

Yes...sigh...
Basically we can’t sue them for any reason. I don’t expect that we would anyway, but it definitely adds to the pucker factor.

The 2010 is the last model year before the refresh, so I’m hoping that a lot of the common gremlins were worked out. Otherwise, I expect I’ll be learning a lot about MB systems.
The car itself is crazy comfortable on the road. We’re planning at least 2 road trips this summer, and probably three or four, so I’m actually kind of looking forward to having it for those.

Well here is some good news:
There is a good chance that what they’re doing isn’t legal/enforceable.

Well, our RAV4 was bought on the cheap, and was a rebuilt car. Apparently in Colorado you can rebuild a car and get a clean title (as opposed to a rebuilt title), which we didn’t know at the time. Suffice to say, it was not Toyota reliable, but it was Toyota tin-can comfortable.
Plus, Toyota anything goes for a premium on the used market, so we were looking at many years older or much less-nice for a Toyota with third row. My wife is one of those who doesn’t want to drive a minivan, so the Sienna was off the table anyway.
We did look at the ‘14 Hyundai Santa Fe, but anything in our price range was the absolute lowest trim, and she didn’t like them as much as the Merc anyhow.

Just outside Birmingham (AL), about 30 minutes from the R Class factory. When these were still being built, there were at least three R63 models in my area with manufacturer tags on them.
Diesels are always a conundrum — at one point in time (15+ years ago) they were definitely the more durable engines, but after turbos and urea injection and all the other compliance bells and whistles, it swung the other way.
I really wanted one back when they were new, but didn’t want the AWD which was mandatory with the diesel, IIRC.
I love the gas V6 in these, too. Powerful enough to do the job, and well proven around the Mercedes lineup. Great mix of power and economy as gassers go.

I’m really hoping this thing isn’t quite Allroad territory in terms of upkeep. In its favor, it has no forced induction, it’s the last year before the refresh (‘10), and I don’t think there are very many cars with air suspension as disreputable as the Allroad (although I wonder if that’s partly because of the differences in how Allroads were driven).
That said, I’m betting we paid more ($13k and change after taxes) for the R class than you did for the Allroad...

Mine is an 06, so all of the problems. But you won’t find one with a better service history, during my ownership or previous ownership.
Mine has been used for lots of road trips and yeah, it’s the best road trip car for a group of people. We did 6 people in comfort from LA to Portland with a few days with oh stuff for each. Every nook and cranny was packed tight, but it was still super comfortable. 2nd row is the place to be, especially if front row doesn’t mind your feet

$57k engine repairs would like a word with your Allroad.

Obviously I don’t pay attention. I was not aware you owned an R-class too

06 R500 but admittedly it doesn’t get a lot of posts on here, at least not since I bought it

Eh, turbos didn’t kill the reliability. Some of the most reliable diesels of all time have a turbo. Diesel unreliability as of late is 100% down to emissions standards.
![]() 05/29/2018 at 20:26 |

Agreed, but all things considered a turbo will never be more reliable than a non-turbo. But on a Diesel, it’s a necessity.
Emissions trickery absolutely killed it, even before Dieselgate. They were just trying to do too much at once.

o yea, i know that one. damn, if I had $57k to dump into an allroad....there were a lot of Porsche parts that would go right on to the Allroad. I think Cayenne brakes were just a bolt on swap.
